You cannot control the flow of time; you cannot even control the direction in which it flows. You were born and you will die, and whatever you live in between is yours!

We are busy with so many things: making money, studying, getting into a good university, having a beautiful wedding, buying a house, buying a car, and so on; the list never ends. But what about life? Is life really like this? Once we own one thing, we struggle and toil for the next, and in the end we grow old with the things we did or did not manage to own. So when you become a sweet old grandmother or grandfather and look back, is life just saying “I have that house there, this car here, I finished that school,” and then quietly waiting for death in a corner? There is a huge world out there, full of memories waiting to be made and beautiful things waiting to be discovered, nearly seven billion people, nearly seven billion lives. And you are going to hide behind the sentence “Yes, but you need money for that”? Life is really not like that. A Russian friend of mine was a wealthy oligarch. When we talked, he told me he didn’t even own a house; he lived in a rented one. He had one car, and he used it to explore nature when he wasn’t working. Another friend of mine, an Englishman, had seen twenty-four countries by the age of eighteen. You, on the other hand, spent two years from the age of sixteen solving practice tests in a room at home to get into a good university. The result: you didn’t get into a good university, and two years were wasted, the most productive, most energetic years of your life. If you had fallen in love then, it would have been the most passionate love of all; if you had set off on a journey, you would have found yourself at the other end of the world without ever getting tired. Then what happened? Excuse my language, but you graduated from a second-rate department of a second-rate university and, if you were very lucky, became the assistant to the assistant of something at some company, for a meager salary. Pfff…!

We were taught life the wrong way. Get into a good high school so you can go to a good college; once you are in a good high school, get high scores to get into a good university; once you are in university, that’s not enough, do a master’s, then a PhD… From the age of twelve until our thirties, we were forced to devote and spend our lives on whatever others imposed on us. And we did. Some of us out of fear, some out of worries about a good future and a respected place in society, some out of the need to make money; we clung with both hands to what was imposed on us, without even knowing that the top-ranked university in our own country was ranked 260th in the world. I don’t ask myself the famous question that starts with “If only I had known then what I know now…”, but you are exactly at that point right now. If you want to learn something in life, learn languages. Learn them relentlessly, obsessively! Forget about the high school, the university, the certificates, the formal education. Learn languages. Know English perfectly, for example; then, however hard it is, learn Chinese; and third, Spanish. These three languages open the horizons of about five billion people in the world to you; they open up their world, and maybe even their borders.

I am not a keyboard warrior dreaming of a utopian world. Exceptions never break the rule. We are seven billion people, and there are just as many insects, oceans, plankton, fish, plants, germs, viruses and bacteria. They all wake up hungry in the morning, and without exception they all go to bed full at night. Of course, there are many people who are hungry; that cannot be denied. But among so many who are fed, don’t be afraid: one way or another, you will not go hungry, because you are not the guarantor of your own sustenance. Start exploring with yourself. First discover what makes you happy. Is it wandering through mountains, plains and steppes? Do great adventures that begin with a small step define you? Or a great love? Singing? Football? Writing? Sleeping in a tent in the middle of nature while the reflection of a dying campfire dances on the canvas? Dancing? Rap? The guitar? A wild Solomun electronic music concert that lasts until morning? I can’t know. You are all beautiful in your own different ways, and the inner world and dream world of each of you is as vast and infinite as the universe above us, holding billions of stars. Starting today, make room in your life for your dreams, and see everything else only as a means of reaching the dreams that make you who you are. That is enough. If you grow old, you will have perfect dreams you made come true to tell about; and if you don’t, you will at least be on that path, like the ant carrying water to the fire. And that is enough.

When I think about it, it sometimes hurts deeply: how can people who spend decades getting into a school, graduating and then working for minimum wage do nothing for their dreams? How can they not find what makes them happy and chase it? Don’t be fooled by those who say “Get married already, you’re getting too old.” Don’t be afraid; you won’t end up alone. Don’t say “I’d better get married or I’ll never have children.” If you haven’t even become yourself yet, what kind of role model will you be for that child? Yes, sometimes they will judge you only by your finances; some will criticize you for the schools you couldn’t attend or finish, and every time they will say, “Our neighbor’s son (or daughter) was like this and like that.” Believe me, this will never end. Even if you become a professor, there will be a distinguished professor; even if you have millions, there will be someone with billions. But these days you hardly find a young person who is true to themselves, true to their essence, with a dream of their own; an individual with a philosophy, a belief, a purpose. Rather than spending a lifetime chasing something you don’t love and don’t enjoy, be a traveler on the path of the life you love! Even if there are potholes and traffic jams along the way, isn’t the dream of seeing the sea at the end of the journey enough for you?

The essence of all this is about the “if onlys” in your life. Reduce the “if onlys” in your life. On the road you take to reduce them, you will come across such beauty and such adventures. Perhaps, among new dreams, new opportunities and new adventures, you will find yourself in a world very different from where you started. Maybe the memories you slowly gather won’t even fit into your diaries. Wouldn’t you like to find answers to the questions “Who am I? What am I? What do I want? What makes me happy?” in a world bigger and more beautiful than the one you first imagined? Wouldn’t you ever like to find yourself? Find yourself, dear reader. Because if you don’t, wherever you go, you will be lost. That’s all…
